• I just got DSL internet service and now my fax machine wont work. |
|
| The short answer is no. The difference in technologies will not allow a standard fax machine (no matter the make or model) to fax over a DSL connection. Basically, you would need to switch to a software fax program that will fax without dialing up. This important because standard fax programs will attempt to dial just as a standard fax machine and will not work. The best way to get arround all of this is to just scan your documents in and attach them to an e-mail then send it that way.
Below are quotes from other companies regarding this same problem:
From a DSL Service Provider (FrontierNet):
Can I use my fax machine on my DSL line?
Chances are, your fax program(s) are designed to work with a dial up connection/dial up modem. Most fax programs will use your dial up modem to connect to other fax machines, or 'dial'. With DSL, your computer is automatically connected to the Internet via the DSL line/modem/signal. There is no 'dialing' involved. To use your fax program(s), most likely you will need to disconnect your DSL connection and connect your dial up modem (with filters on the line, if you're using the phone line that your DSL is normally on).
If your particular fax program states that it is compatible with DSL, contact the program's manufacturer for information on coordinating the fax program with your DSL connection. Unfortunately, we do not support third party software such as fax programs here at the Internet help desk.

Hi I know that a standard answer to the question of Fax over DSl is "No", but I need to delve further than that and see there is an easy way to setup a fax over DSL service. I don't want to use eFAX or other internet style faxing services. I would like to see in the answer some explanation of the technology behind DSL and why it is not possible and the current research and if possible products or Telco's that are available to do Fax over DSL.

Hi,
Thank you for your question.
DSL terminal adapters are digital devices that communicate with routers and similar networking equipment. Fax machines are analogue devices that use variations in current to send images. There is no physical way for a DSL terminal adapter to communicate directly with a fax machine.
The Internet services you mention will use a computer attached to a fax machine to convert a digital image or document, into an analogue image. Any product providing such a feature will have to do something similar in one way or another. A terminal adapter manufacturer could "cheat" and package an analogue fax machine into a DSL terminal adapter thus permit transparent faxing. But this would still be analogue, slow, would transmit over the phone line and fully occupy the phone line.
In short, these are incompatible technologies. A conversion has to take place from a digital signal to an analogue signal. Fax over DSL is called email :)
I hope this answers your question. If something is unclear or if you want more information please do not hesitate to ask for clarifications.
Thanks. endo
